Conductor Yu Long’s elite group is by far the best choice for tonal quality, program selection, and variety of guest
conductors and soloists. These have included the likes of Sir Andrew Davis, Itzhak Perlman, Placido Domingo and
Krzysztof Penderecki.
The China Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO)- which usually plays the Poly Theatre (1st floor, Poy Plaza, 14
Dongzhimen Nandajie, Chaoyang District; Phone:010-6506-5345; Subway line 2 at Dongsishitiao) or the
Forbidden City Concert Hall (inside Zhongshan Park, Xichanganjie, Doncheng District; Phone: 010-6559-8285;
Subway: Line 1 at Tiananmen Xi)– is also the first choice for returning Chinese ’local boys made good’, such as
piano prodigies/bitter rivals Lang Lang (朗朗) and Yundi Li (李云迪), violinist Li Chuanyun and cellist Wang Jian.
The China Philharmonic Orchestra performed Mozart’s Requiem with the Shanghai Opera House Chorus for Pope
Benedict XVI on Wednesday May 7, 2008 at the Vatican. It was the first time that Chinese orchestra performed at
the Vatican, evoking memories of Ping-Pong diplomacy, which helped lead to the restoration of relations between
the United States and China in the 1970s, with music instead of sports as the bonding agent.
