Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts (Chinese: 国家大剧院, formerly known as the National Grand Theatre,
nicknamed the "egg"), which opened in December 2007 after three years of delay, is designed to be China's foremost cultural
center. The $400 million Complex, one of the most talked-about and controversial architectural projects for years, is an ellipsoid
dome of titanium and glass surrounded by an artificial lake and sits in stark contrast next to the monolithic, 1950s Soviet-style
Great Hall of the People in
Tiananmen Square.  Designed by French architect Paul Andreu, the 149,500 square metre (37
acre) building has a 2398-seat opera house, a 2,019-seat concert hall with pipe organ and a 1,035-seat theatre for plays, with
competitively priced tickets. Guests arrive in the building after walking through a hallway that goes underneath the lake.
