Caochangdi Arts - Beijing's New Artistic Hotbed

Caochangdi (which means “grasslands”),  an urban village and arts
community on the northeastern outskirts of Beijing, is emerging as one of
China’s artistic hotbeds.

Less then a decade ago, Caochangdi had virtually no arts presence but now
20 galleries from the USA, Japan, Germany, Korea, Holland, Beijing,
Shanghai, Switzerland and another 20 cultural enterprises, including arts
organizations, studios, museums and art schools, operate within or near the
village. And the galleries are top-notch.

“When a silkworm produces silk, it would never dream there is a Silk Road,”
artist and architect Ai Weiwei, co-designer of the
Bird's Nest stadium, quoted
a verse written by his father, the poet Ai Qing.  Ai Weiwei, the first prominent
artist to move to the village, was a catalyst in turning the area into an arts
haven,

Ai designed and built his studio and the groundbreaking
China Art Archives &
Warehouse in the village - located near the Fifth Ring Road, 20km north of
the city center - in 1999, attracted by the space needed for contemporary art
and the relatively affordable rent in such an outlying area. Ai has since
designed or built many of other galleries and studios in the area.

Unlike the more self-contained, sanitized, and tourist-friendly
798 Art District,
located in a former factory site about 10 minutes away by car, Caochangdi is
still a loose sprawl of unnamed and sometimes unpaved roads, crisscrossed
by clotheslines and studded with mounds of gravel and dirt that accompany
the area’s many construction sites. Yet it is precisely this unique combination
of elements — a mix of residents that includes foreign and Chinese art
dealers, villagers, experimental artists, day laborers, and taxi drivers; coupled
with a location that offers some degree of peace and quiet, large, well-
designed spaces, and undeveloped land — that has fostered a sense of
community in Caochangdi.  For lack of a better comparison, Cao Changdi is
akin to NY’s Chelsea with 798 Art Factory District more like NY’s SOHO.

The village was a grazing land centuries ago, then an imperial hunting ground
and later a royal graveyard complete with extensive, reputedly beautiful
gardens. In the 1960s the imperial gardens and the villagers who tended them
were converted into an agricultural commune during the "cultural revolution"
(1966-76). The southern part of the village became an office park in the early
years of China's reform and opening up. Many of the different industrial-style
buildings from those days are still occupied by foreign and domestic
companies. The unused ones provide the kind of space that attracts Ai and
other contemporary artists.

Indeed, as the 798 District, the epicenter of Beijing’s lively contemporary art
scene, becomes increasingly crowded with boutiques and tourists, some of
China’s leading gallery owners are bypassing the district altogether, and
heading directly to Caochangdi Village.

In the past several years, many of the city’s most important art spaces have
chosen to call Caochangdi home, making the village a mandatory destination
for arts professionals visiting the city and local collectors and enthusiasts.

  • Three Shadows Photography Art Center

Opened late 2007, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre has quickly established itself as the premier venue for photography
in Beijing. This gallery is probably the best point of entry for the Caochangdi galleries, lying at the centre of the district. The
Center itself is an elegant complex including an open yard, an older, industrial, red brick building, and an elegant gray brick
gallery complex that unfolds around the yard, designed by Ai Weiwei. It was founded by photographer couple Rong Rong and
inri in 2007, in order to exhibit works by underrepresented and emerging photographers. In addition to the gallery space, the
center also houses a café, shop, and an impressive library of photography history, theory, and monographs.

One aspect of the center that is remarkable is its willingness to take risks through contests and group exhibitions – showing
some very surprising work as a result. At present there is an installation by artists Zhuang Hui and Dan’er, documenting and
interrogating the history of Yumen, the once oil-rich city in Gansu province. But showing conceptually-inclined work like this is
not an exceptional feature of the Center; the range of work exhibited will often allow room for the conceptual as well as the more
normative. And overall, this is the reason that the Three Shadows Photography Art Center is worth visiting. It has an outstanding
mission, and shows work that likely would otherwise be left unseen.

  • Galerie Urs Meile

This Swiss gallery established its Beijing branch in 1996 and quickly became one of the most respected spaces in Beijing for
contemporary Chinese art. Galerie Urs Meile is situated in the actual village of Caochangdi Cun, easily recognized amidst the
run-down white-tile buildings that populate the area. The gallery complex is distinctive by virtue of its height, unusual design,
and also for its gray brickwork. Again, like Three Shadows, Galerie Urs Meile was designed by Ai Weiwei – whom it also
represents, along with other well-known experimental artists such as Tracy Snelling or, as with his current controversial (and
somewhat repulsive) exhibition called “The Wings of Live Art,” He Yunchang. Galerie Urs Meile, which has a sister gallery in
Lucerne, Switzerland, has become known for bold new works from established avant-garde artists in China and the West. In
addition to the gallery spaces at the Urs Meile complex, they also play host to an artist-in-residence program, allowing Western
artists the chance to come live and work in Beijing.
