For China, sustainable design isn't merely an interesting idea. It's necessary for controlling
energy usage in crowded and constantly expanding urban areas.

The recently completed Beijing Linked Hybrid designed by Steven Holl Architects, which will
support 2,500-plus residents with more than 700 apartments covering 1.6 million square feet in
eight linked towers, is a model for large-scale sustainable residential architecture. This complex
will have the largest geothermal heating/cooling and greywater recycling system of any residential
building in the world, which will stabilize the temperature within the complex of eight buildings, all
linked at the 20th floor by a “ring” of service establishments, like cafes and dry cleaners. A set of
dual pipes pumps water from 100 meters below ground, circulating the liquid between the
buildings’ concrete floors.

The result: The water-circulation system serves as a giant radiator in the winter and cooling
system in the summer. It has no boilers to supply heat, no electric air conditioners to supply cool.
The apartments also feature gray-water recycling — a process that’s just starting to catch on in
Beijing in much smaller buildings — to filter waste water from kitchen sinks and wash basins back
into toilets. It also has green roofs, filters to protect residents from pollution and large ponds to
harvest recycled rainwater.

However, for all its plaudits, the Linked Hybrid project has attracted many criticisms. Among them
is that its brand of green luxury won't come cheap. With apartments selling for 44,000 Yuan, or
$6,000, per square meter, it can only appeal to China's nouveaux riches, further creating social
division in what is already a deprived area of the city.
