There are around 80 mosques in Beijing and the Ox Street Mosque is the oldest and largest of them all dating back to the 10th
century. Islam has been active in China for over a millennium. Originally built (in wood) by an imam named Nasruddin, the son of
an Arabic cleric who came to China to preach the Islamic faith in 996, When it was first built, the architecture of the Ox Street
Mosque was in pure Arabic style. During its many phases of reconstruction and renovation,  elements of traditional Chinese
architecture were adopted.

The Niujie mosque is located in the city's Hui district, near numerous Muslim restaurants and shops. The Hui, a Chinese Muslim
minority group mainly from Ningxia province, are now scattered throughout China and number around 250,000 in Beijing. The
men are easily identified by their beard and characteristic white hats.

Ox street mosque is an attractive edifice, with Islamic motifs and Arabic versed decorating its halls and assorted stelae. It's  most
prized possession is a 300-year-old, hand-written copy of the Koran (Gulanjing). Among several items of historical interest, the
mosque features a stone tablet by Kangxi absolving the Hui Muslim people of a conspiracy to overthrow the Qing Dynasty.

Astronomical observations and lunar calculations were made from the tower-like Wangyue Lou. The graves of two Yuan dynasty
Arab missionaries engraved with Arabic inscriptions can be seen here. The courtyard is lush with greenery, making it an idyllic
escape from the city’s busy streets. Visitors should dress conservatively, and non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the prayer
hall.
