On Feb 4,2010, Tai Shan and Mei Lan, a 3-year-old female panda born at Zoo Atlanta, will
travel on board a custom-decaled FedEx Express 777 Freight - known as the "FedEx Panda
Express" - from Washington's Dulles International Airport to Chengdu, Sichuan province.

A detailed genome map of the giant panda completed by Chinese scientists has shown that
the notoriously shy animal is genetically similar to the dog, state media reported Sunday.     

  • The Smithsonian's National Zoo is returning beloved giant panda Tai Shan to China.
    Zoo officials said Friday that Tai Shan will go in January or February 2010 for breeding.
    The cub was fondly named "butter stick" by many of his adoring fans because at birth
    he was no bigger than a stick of butter. His birthday parties continue to be a popular
    attraction at the zoo.

China will start building a new giant panda breeding centre as early as next month after last
year's 8.0-magnitude earthquake destroyed much of their habitat, according to state media.

The new facility, to be called the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center,  will
replace Wolong Panda Breeding Center about six miles away in southwestern Sichuan
province where most of China's captive pandas were kept before the earthquake.

Eight young Olympic pandas have returned to their native Sichuan province, after their 10-
month stay in the
Beijing zoo following last year's devastating earthquake.

Their visit to the capital, which was planned before the quake, was meant to add cheer to the
Olympics in August. The pandas were being flown to Chengdu before being transferred to
Bifengxia Giant Panda Base in the town of Ya'an. Their former home, the world-famous
Wolong reserve was nearly destroyed in the May 12 earthquake.

The pandas will have a new home in Sichuan province with indoor air conditioning and outdoor
swimming pools.

Scientists in China have finished mapping the genome of the giant panda, unlocking secrets
about why they eat bamboo and have black circles around their eyes.

A three-year-old female panda, named Jing Jing, was chosen by scientists for the genome
sequencing. Jing Jing was also used as a model by the artists drawing up Beijing's Olympic
mascots.

Wang Jun, a scientist at the Beijing Genomics Institute, said the work should help scientists to
understand why pandas have so few cubs.

  • Ten giant panda cubs will be on display at the Shanghai World Expo
    in 2010 at the city's zoos, giving tens of millions of Chinese and
    foreign visitors a glimpse at the highly endangered species. The six
    females and four males will arrive in Shanghai in January 2010 and
    spend six months at the Shanghai Zoo and six months at Wild Animal
    Park of Shanghai,  All the pandas were born at the country's main
    panda research base in Sichuan province after the May 2008
    earthquake that killed or left missing nearly 90,000 people. The
    Expo, due to begin May 1, 2010 and run for six months, is expected
    to draw 70 million visitors.
