Beijing 古北口古长城
Gubeikou (Old Northern Entrance, originally called Hubeikou) Great Wall in
Miyun County (120 kilometers (75 miles) Northeast of Beijing) provides vital
access to a road that runs south and north across the Yanshan Mountains.
With the Panlongshan (Coiling Dragon Mountain) and Wohushan (Crouching
Tiger Mountain) in the background, this section of the Great Wall is linked to
the Qingfeng (Green Wind) and Dichu (Piled Verdure) peaks. The Chaohe
River runs across the Wall from north to south.
The main section of Gubeikou knits the Panlong and Wohu mountains into
an integral whole to form an impregnable fortification. In 1378 the 11th year
of the Hongwu reign of the Ming dynasty, General Xu Da had this section of
the Great Wall rebuilt. It runs for more than 20 kilometers and consists of
four sections: Wohushan, Panlongshan, Jinshanling, and Simatai.
There are 14 beacon towers, 143 watch towers, 16 strategic pass, three
citadels and many other military constructions. Many of them are famous
cultural relics, such as the Big Flower Beacon Tower of the Northern Qi
Dynasty, Fairy Tower, General Tower, and the dominant Wangjing Tower.
The inside of these towers varies in design. While some have a flat ceiling,
others either have an arched ceiling, a domed ceiling, or an octagonal,
painted ceiling. Each tower has two floors, six archways, and ten arched
doors, allowing garrisoned soldiers to advance and retreat freely. The
towers are also different in size. The largest one can accommodate a
garrison of 100 soldiers, and the smallest one a garrison of 10 soldiers. The
towers often have one to six portholes. Few sections have seen as many
battles as Gubeikou. Some of the battles are rather famous in Chinese
History.

By Bus (a).Take a bus to Chengde City or Luanping County at Sihui long-
distance bus station, the bus leaves at about every half an hour between 05:
10 and 16:05. Get off at Gubeikou Tunnel and you will see the wall.
(b). Take a bus to Miyun County at Dongzhimen long-distance bus
station in Beijing, get off at Miyun Bus Station, and take a minibus to
Gubeikou Great Wall, but most of the minibuses at Miyun Bus Station are
privately owned, which are less safe than the state owned buses. It is
advisable to take state-owned buses, you are advised to get off at Gulou
(Bell Tower) in Miyun County, and take the state-owned minibus to the north
of Miyun Hospital. It costs about CNY 3 to Gubeikou.
By Car: Start from Siyuanqiao Bridge, take Jingshun Lu and reach Kuliushu
Roundabout, head for the direction of Miyun, reach Niulanshan Roundabout,
drive along the National Highway 101, pass Miyun County and Taishitun, and
you will arrive at Gubeikou Town.

古北口自古就为重要的交通枢纽。曾因关西南有卧虎山而称为“虎北口”。在唐代称为“虎白口”，曾设东军、北口二守护卫。五代
时为战场，宋代是使臣出辽必经之地。金代称留斡岭，贞祐二年（公元1214年），建铁门关。元代为大都（北京）至上都（内蒙）
的必经之地。明初在这里设立千户所，以后又升格为古北口路，管辖附近的15个关口，派重兵严加把守。古北口一带北齐天保年间
（公元550年--559年）就修有长城，那是北齐政权从今大同市附近修到渤海长达 1500公里长城的中间一段。不过那时的长城工程
简陋，墙体多用黄土夯筑，经过久远年代的风雨剥蚀，如今已踪迹难觅了。今天我们看到的古北口长城均为明代所修。

古北口城北，东有蟠龙山，西有卧虎山，山势险峻，崖壁陡立，两山紧锁潮河，河岸只有一辆车可通过的道路。金代曾于此处修建
铁门扼守，所以就叫“铁门关”，也称古北口关。清朝，在古北口河西村增设柳林营，建提督府，开辟御道，修行宫，置重兵驻守关
口。
将军楼为二层楼，高10米，四边各宽10.10米，东西各有三个箭窗，南北各有四个箭窗，四个方向各有一门。此楼曾经受了抗
日战争的猛烈炮火，如今仍很坚固。顶部的垛口已完全被当初的炮火击毁，除中部已塌毁的直径约一米的圆孔外，楼顶的圆拱均已
裸露在外。著名的长城抗战中敌我双方争夺最激烈的就是将军楼。
二十四眼楼也是古北口长城段的尽头。二十四眼楼是一座建筑奇特的敌楼，它的西北部已塌毁，只有东部和西南向的墙还在那
里坚固的挺立着。因为原来四面共有二十四个箭窗而得名。此楼地势高耸，东接金山岭，西望卧虎山，由于战略地位重要，因此修
得特别高大独特。
