Family Travel Guide - Around Beijing with kids
Children’s attractions in Beijing
Many of Beijing’s mainstream tourist attractions can be child-friendly; places such as the Summer Palace and the Forbidden
City all have big grounds that provide a perfect place for children to run around and explore. A visit to the giant pandas at
the Beijing Zoo is a must for most children, as is an evening at one of the acrobatic performances, such as the one at the
Chaoyang Theatre. There are plenty of museums and amusement parks, including the city’s newest, Happy Valley, which
offers some of the most thrilling rides in the world.

The vast range of shells, coins, and notes is as likely to bewilder as to fascinate. While the tour guides' chant of "5,000
years of history" rings hollow, "5,000 years of retail" rings true. Confucius and Mao both railed in vain against the mercantile
spirit. The exhibition should also impress upon you how simple it is to mint coins; the stalls of the Ancient Coin Market
(Gudai Qianbi Jiaoyi Shichang) outside are testament to how easy they are to duplicate -- don't make large purchases.
Desheng Men Jianlou (Desheng Men Arrow Tower), which houses the exhibition, is akin to an imposing castle, with many
dark crannies to explore.

Created in 1906 by the Empress Dowager Cixi to accommodate animals bought from abroad by a high-ranking official, it
was then called the 'Park of Ten Thousand Creatures'. Now With over 600 animal species on display, there's not only a
chance to meet China's national treasure, the giant panda (daxiongmao, 大熊猫), but also the golden monkey, Yangtze
alligators, cranes, deer and other rare species native to China. However, parents be warned; if you've got sensitive
children, be prepared for the fact that, while the conditions the animals are kept in are steadily improving, they are still not
up to Western standards.
