Swire Hotels’ first boutique hotel, the 99-room Opposite House at the Village at
Sanlitun, in Bejing, is the first hotel by renowned avant-garde Japanese
architect Kengo Kuma (his projects including LVMH group headquarters and
the Suntory Museum in Tokyo) and creative Shanghai-based designers Lyndon
Neri and Rossana Hu.
The name, The Opposite House, is derived from a translation of a Chinese
word "瑜舍" (guesthouse), which historically described the building located
opposite the main house in a courtyard where esteemed guests would stay.
The hotel’s exterior, a striking emerald glass, is in keeping with the stunning
glass exteriors of The Village at Sanlitun, one of Beijing’s premier open-plan
shopping and entertainment destinations, of which The Opposite House is an
integral part.
Among the hotel’s many striking features, a stainless-steel-clad swimming pool
is designed to dramatically reflect both natural light and exciting fibre optic
lighting. Guest rooms meanwhile are strikingly open and simple with natural
brushed oak floors, furniture and even bathtubs, with subtle touches of Chinese
décor to evoke a sense of place in Beijing.
The hotel’s 99 rooms will include 10 spacious suites which will be amongst the
largest in Beijing with more than half being over 70 sqm. All guest rooms will be
strikingly simple with natural wooden floors and subtle touches of Chinese
décor, lending each one a sense of place. Plus the other standards: flat-screen
television, DVD player, a flip-out power/data station beside the desk, with every
cable you could ever need.
Clad in wood, the separate toilet and rain shower felt like mini-saunas, minus
the sweat. In the room proper, the sleek oak double sink, with expansive back-
lighted mirror, was accessorized by a handy bag of free toiletries. But the
highlight was the oak soaking tub, conveniently abutting a glass partition with a
clear view of the television.
Your inner penny-pincher and midnight snacker will love it here: Wi-Fi and
minibar are free. (More specifically, beer, soda and water are free; wine and
cocktails must be ordered.)
On the hotel’s lower level, there’s Sureño, a popular Mediterranean restaurant
with a sunken outdoor garden. From Sureño, a catwalk takes you through a
cascade of fiberoptic lights to Bei, which serves northern Asian cuisine. Á la
carte and cold-table breakfast is available in the lobby cafe (check with the
hotel to see if it’s included in your rate). There’s also a nightclub called Punk,
and Thursday is (unofficial) gay night at the ground-floor lounge Mesh. The
hotel has a stainless steel swimming pool that’s too beautiful to use, with gym
equipment beside it.
The Opposite House has eliminated the check-in counter and will greet guests
at their cars and escort them to their rooms, producing keycards with a
handheld unit.
