When Song opened at the beginning of 2008, bar-goers and clubbers fed up with overly loud music and an
overwhelming crush of people finally had somewhere grown-up and cool to party.
Designed by artist Zhong Song (from whom the bar gets its name) the smooth, curved wooden interior creeps like a coral
reef up towards the back wall in a ziggurat of wave-like ridges, the pinnacle dotted with seating and vantage points
looking down on the crowd.
At its highest point by the back wall, you're a good 20 feet above the large, table-free dance floor and get a good view of
the DJ booth, and indeed the rest of the club, though you are at risk from a drunken tumble downwards.
Behind the DJ is a huge projection screen making this the VJ hinterland that 6M had abortively promised to be. Last
month's opening night saw Coldcut demolish the dance floor with a barrage of bass, breaks and a live visual show almost
as impressive as the mixing.
During the week, Song turns the lights up and the music down, giving itself more of a lounge vibe. Weekends on the
other hand will feature livelier parties that take advantage of Song's sound system and fine acoustics - those on the
dance floor hear the music at a respectably loud volume, whilst those perched at the back hear it at a bearable
conversation level.
Tables can be booked with a minimum charge while drinks are moderately priced for such a venue; 35RMB for bottles of
Tsingtao and 45RMB for standard mixers.
The only downside is the toilets. Located outside the club, it's never nice having to walk away from the music to let
nature take its course. However Song Music Bar + Kitchen really needs to be seen to be believed, with a dedicated
management committed to quality music, don't expect the predictable gaggle of big name DJs passing through.
The hype hasn't quite reached critical mass yet, but expect to be hearing about the place a lot over the coming months;
this time your friends have cause to be excited, and you surely wont be disappointed, meaning the only thing left to say
is that this is blatantly Beijing's best bar.
