以“惊、险、奇”著称的司马台长城，世界文化遗产、国家4A级旅游景区、全国重点文物保护单位，位于密云县东北部的古
北口镇境内，距北京市区约120公里，从101国道或京承高速公路均可到达。是以明代长城为主体的历史古迹旅游景区。
司马台长城始建于明洪武初年（1368），加修于明隆庆至万历年间戚继光任蓟镇总兵之时。隶属明代“九镇”中蓟镇古北口
路所辖。1987年北京市政府对司马台长城进行了保护性修缮工程，1990年正式对游客开放。
司马台长城东起望京楼，西至后川口，全长5.7公里，敌楼35座（包括已毁水中楼一座），是万里长城中敌楼比较稠
密的一段，两敌楼距离最近的不足20米。司马台长城山势陡峭，地势险峻，工程浩大，虎踞龙盘，气势非凡。整段长城构
思精巧，设计奇特，结构新颖，形态各异。城墙和敌楼建筑式样繁多，保存比较完好，真实的体现了古代劳动人民的聪明
才智，具有很高的军事、建筑、艺术等多方面的科考价值。著名长城专家罗哲文教授经多次考察论证后指出“中国长城是
世界之最，而司马台长城又堪称中国长城之最 ”。
司马台长城历经四百多年的风霜雨雪洗礼，至今仍然较好的保存着明长城原貌，大量的文字砖群，技艺精湛的浮雕，
完美的建筑工艺和长城磅礴飞舞的身躯，最大限度地保留了历史信息。司马台分东西两线伸展蔓延，东线长城建在刀削斧
劈似的山脊上，仅在2.7公里间，从海拔295米骤然升至986米，长城犹如一条巨龙从湖水中腾空飞起，直指云端。司马台
长城对游客开放后，先后建立了索道、索桥、游船、登城快车、滑索等游乐游览设施。自2002年以来，司马台长城每年
都举办长城穿越活动，加之春季踏青等项目，吸引了大量游客。
司马台长城必赏景观
在千米山峰之巅密布15座敌楼。“将军楼”匠心独运；“仙女楼”建筑精美。仙女楼，是司马台长城东线的第15座敌楼，汉白
玉拱门上刻有并蒂莲花浮雕。它高耸挺立、宛若仙女玉立在群山之巅。当地还留传着仙女与放羊倌恋爱的美丽传说。过
“仙女楼”即是悬于陡峭的峰巅危崖之上，一道通天石梯——“天桥”。与之紧密相连的便是 “望京楼”。望京楼，为司马台长
城东线第16座敌楼，海拔986米。它耸立在老虎山顶峰，是司马台和古北口一线长城的最高点，素有北京市文物制高点之
称。站在楼上依稀可见北京城的轮廓，夜晚还可以看到北京城的万家灯火，故此得名。长城的峡谷中深藏两泉，两泉汇成
一湖，湖水冷暖各半，堪称一绝。较为平缓的司马台西线长城，则另有一番情趣。原汁原味近乎完整的的垛墙、女儿墙、
垛口、门窗、楼顶、礌石孔、射击孔、排水沟、排水嘴等，令人浮想联翩。在司马台西段长城第13座敌楼上，有一块麒麟
影壁墙。影壁墙在上层垛口的西南位置上，与望亭内檐明间相对，上部有瓦顶，影壁心用15块方砖拼雕出威猛如生的麒
麟。

Remote and largely unrestored, the Great Wall at Simatai is ideal if you're
seeking adventure. Near the frontier garrison at Gubeikou, the wall traverses
towering peaks and hangs precariously above cliffs. Be prepared for no-
handrails hiking, tough climbs, and unparalleled vistas. Several trails lead to
the wall from the parking lot. There are towers at regular intervals, providing
natural rest- and photo-stops.
In summer, a cable car takes you two-thirds of the way up; from there it's a
steep 40-minute climb to the summit. Heading east from the Miyun reservoir at
a moderate pace will take you to Wangjing Ta (Wangjing Tower, Watching
Beijing Tower), the 16th watchtower, after about 3 hours. Beyond this is the
appropriately named Tian Qiao (Heavenly Bridge, Sky Bridge), a thin, tilted
ridge where the Wall narrows to only a few feet -- the section that is now off-
limits. For a longer hike, head west over the bridge toward the restored
Jinshanling section. The hike to Jinshanling is a strenuous 9 km (5.6 mi),
usually taking around 4 hours up and down sublime sections of the wall. Be
aware that crossing to Jinshanling costs Y5. People who wish to hike from one
to the other often ask their driver to wait for them at their destination. (Note
that hikers usually go from Jinshanling to Simatai, where buses back to Beijing
are easier to find.)
Visitor Information -- The ticket office (tel. 010/6903-1051), a 10-minute
walk away in a village south of the reservoir, is open 8am to 7:30pm in
summer and 8am to dusk in winter. Admission is ¥40 ($5.35/£2.65). The cable
car runs from 8am to 5pm, April to November; a round-trip ride to the no. 8
Tower costs ¥50 ($6.65/£3.35), or ¥30 ($4/£2) one-way. Those walking west
to Jin Shan Ling will be charged ¥5 (65¢/35p) to cross a bridge.
Getting There -- The best no-hassle option is to visit with one of the Youth
Hostelling International tours (tel. 010/8188-9323); these leave the YHAs daily
between 7 and 8am and cost ¥150 ($20/£10) for simple transportation. The
you no. 12 travels to Simatai from northeast of the Xuanwu Men (206) metro
stop (Apr to mid-Oct Sat-Sun 6:30-8:30am, every 30 min; ¥70/$9.35/£4.65);
you get about 3 hours at the site. A round-trip taxi ride should cost less than
¥400 ($53/£27).
Where to Stay -- Responding to the popularity of the Jin Shan Ling to Simatai
hike, Simatai YHA (tel. 010/8188-9323; standard room ¥288/$38/£19) opened
in 2004. Courtyard-style rooms are basic, but the coffee is world-class, and
the view of the Wall from the patio is wonderful.
