Simply Madonna exhibition at City of Dreams in Macau.

From Thursday 23 June to Sunday 24 July an exclusive collection of Madonnabilia will be on display at City of Dreams.

Casino operator Melco Crown Entertainment is hosting Asia’s first Madonna exhibition, featuring more than 50 items from the pop queen’s shows and personal life, at its flagship City of Dreams property.

Highlights include the raspberry dress Madge wore in her 1985 Material Girl music video, the satin cone-bra bustier she donned in her 1986 “Open Your Heart” video, and dresses she wore playing Argentina’s Eva Peron in the 1996 musical “Evita.” The Madonna exhibit also features documents such as a cancellation of a postmarital agreement between Madonna and her ex-husband, actor Sean Penn. The document is signed “Madonna Penn”—one of the “rare occasions” the star signed her name as such “since the marriage did not last for very long,” the exhibit plaque says.

Nightlife in Macau

The number of glitzy shows in Macau is far fewer than in Las Vegas — The House of Dancing Water at the City of Dreams casino and Cirque de Soleil’s Zaia at the Venetian gambling complex are currently the only two major shows in town.

Your best bet is to spend the evening away from the casinos altogether. The Ruins of St. Paul’s, the city’s most popular tourist landmark that isn’t draped with neon, was originally developed in the 16th century and, down the centuries, included a cathedral and a college. Today, all that remains is the cathedral façade — the rest of the building was ravaged by a fire in 1835. At night, there is something haunting and sacred about the place, that is, until the chorus of clicking cameras of tourists photographing the full moon reminds you where you are: tourist central. The surrounding area is filled with shops selling souvenirs, almond cookies and meat jerky—a Maccanese speciality.

Just around the corner from the ruins, the Macau Soul wine bar is at 31A Rua de São(Tel: 853-2636-5182), a sidestreet safely tucked away from the tour groups. The proprietors are retired English expatriates David and Jacky Higgins, and the bar — which sells mostly reasonably-priced Portuguese wines as well as an array of interesting cheeses — feels like you are in their living room.

The Whisky Bar (Tel:853-8290-8698) on the 16th floor of the Star World Hotel on Avenida da Amizade stocks more than 80 whiskeys which you can sip to the sound of a Chinese cover band crooning to synth-heavy arrangements of Chinese pop songs.

The Lion’s Bar (Tel: 853-8802-8888) at the MGM Grand (at Avenida Dr. Sun Yat Sen) is situated in the middle of the gaming floor and features some of the best live music in town, courtesy, often, of a Filipino cover band performing renditions of 80s and 90s classics that are better than the originals.

Fat Siu Lau, Macau's oldest restaurant, has kept its customers coming back since 1903 with delicious Macanese favorites and modern creations. Its exterior matches all the other storefronts on this renovated street -- whitewashed walls and red shutters and doors -- which used to serve as Macau's red-light district. The Macanese cuisine here includes its signature roasted pigeon marinated according to a 105-year-old secret recipe; spicy African chicken; curried crab; garoupa stewed with tomatoes, bell pepper, onion, and potatoes; and grilled king prawns. The newer Fat Siu Lau 2 (Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-sen , Edf Vista Magnifica Court,Opposite of Kun Ian Statue, tel. 853/2872 2922) and Fat Siu Lau 3 (Rua Do Regedor 181-185 R/C, Taipa, Macau; Tel: 853/2882 5257) have some fusion innovations in their menu.

Playboy Enterprises Inc., seeking to revive its nightclubs with bunny-suited waitresses, opened a 12,000 square-foot Playboy Club Macau today on the top floor of the Sands Hotel Macao, run by billionaire Sheldon Adelson. The club in Macau will be its second worldwide and will feature gambling facilities, and sell merchandise including clothes, accessories and jewelry. Playboy also plans to open a 30,000 square-foot mansion in Macau’s Cotai Strip in 2012. The Chinese Lunar New Year holidays next February will welcome the Year of the Rabbit, which will be a “great opportunity” to mark Playboy’s arrival in Macau. The Playboy logo uses a rabbit’s head.

Robuchon à Galera, Macau's only three Michelin-starred restaurant and third-place in the list of Asia's 20 best restaurants in the 2010/2011 Miele Guide, opened in 2001 by renowned French chef Joël Robuchon in casino billionaire Stanley Ho’s Hotel Lisboa. Robuchon à Galera serves European cuisine such as roasted guinea fowl and foie gras from its a la carte menu for 1,180 patacas ($148). The 12-course tasting menu (2,100 patacas), is possibly one of the most exquisite fine dining experiences on the island, although, be forewarned the mouth watering fare shall be accompanied by an eye watering bill. Appetizers are wonderful; the cheese, dessert, and after-dinner drink trolleys are hard to pass up. With more than 2,800 classic French, Italian, American, Australian and German wines, it has one of Asia’s best cellars.

Robuchon a Galera （嘉雷拉法国餐厅）

A Lorcha (289A Rua do Almirante Sérgio, Macau Peninsula;2831 3193), just a stone's throw from the Maritime Museum and A-Ma Temple, is arguably the best casual Portuguese eatery on the peninsula. Look for its whitewashed walls, an architectural feature repeated in the interior with an arched, low ceiling. Casual yet often filled with businesspeople, it offers feijoada, codfish in a cream sauce, chargrilled king prawns, clams prepared in garlic and olive oil, grilled pork chops, baked minced beef potato pie, and other traditional dishes that are consistently good. Its name, by the way, refers to a type of Portuguese boat, which is appropriate for a colony founded by seafaring explorers.

Macao gambling has long been one of the most popular attractions to Macao. A recent change in Macao gambling laws has given foreign businesses a chance to compete for the attentions of Macao gambling customers. In the past, Macao gambling laws allowed only local businesses to operate in Macao, but that has all recently changed. With the change in Macao gambling laws has come the onset of many western casinos, including the Sands Casino Macao and the Wynn Casino Macao.

The most popular game in Macao is Baccarat

Gambling in Macao has been legal since the 19th century and developed into a major past time for the people in Macao, especially in Hong Kong and Chinese mainland where such an array of gambling choices is not available. While establishments such as the Grand Lisboa and Fisherman's Wharf have long gained popularity in Macao, some of the newer American casinos that are popping up along the Cotai Strip look to provide friendly competition. Currently, the most popular game in Macao is Baccarat, with games like blackjack, roulette, and many Chinese gambling games coming in close behind. Slot machines are also popular, often referred to in Macao as the "hungry tiger machines."

Travelers who love to gamble will find that gambling in Macao will only continue to grow and improve in quality and size. The economy of Macao relies heavily on gambling and as such hotels and casinos will be taking full advantage of Macao's invitation to foreign builders on the Cotai Strip. The racetracks are also incredibly popular on Macao and one of the primary ways to gamble there.

House of Dancing Water - World's Largest Water Show set to open in Macau

City of Dreams, an integrated entertainment resort developed by Melco Crown Entertainment in Macau, is launching a multi-million dollar water-based spectacle, billed as a "must-see show" in Asia.

With opening night on September 17 at one of the largest water-based theatres in the world, "The House of Dancing Water" is set to wow audiences on the Cotai Strip.

The US$250-million show is a high-energy dramatic spectacle, with watery thrills, and skilled aerialists descending from the skies and brushing past the audience. It combines acrobatics, dance, and even swordplay. The live theatrics will take place in a 270-degree theatre at the City of Dreams casino-resort. The custom-built theatre features ten-ton elevators, which magically convert the space from an aquatic to solid floor stage. The show is the brainchild of Franco Dragone - the creative force behind various Cirque du Solei shows, and aquatic hits "Le Reve" and "O" in Las Vegas. For some Asian flavor, the storyline touches on "seven emotions" derived from classical Confucian beliefs.

It centers around a princess, who is imprisoned by her jealous stepmother, the Serpent Queen. A storm washes ashore a mysterious stranger, who falls in love with the princess and sets out to rescue her. Tapping into some star power close to home, the leading lady is played by the former Principal Dancer of the Hong Kong Ballet, Shanghai-born Faye Leung. And there are heart-pounding moments. Stuntmen drop from the ceiling into the 3.7 million gallon pool, with water volume greater than five Olympic swimming pools. The male lead role is played by former Cirque du Soleil star Jesko von den Steinen, who had to learn how to drop 60 feet into a shallow pool and drive motorbikes in the water for his role.

Past attempts to reinvent Macau as a venue for something more than gambling have made little impact. Last year, ticket sales for the Cirque de Soleil show ZAIA at Las Vegas Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson’s Venetian hotel in Macau were disappointing.
