  • Groupon Launches deal site Gaopeng.com in China 腾讯Groupon合资高朋网正式上线

Posted on February 27th, 2011 Administrator No comments

Groupon has aunched its China site at GaoPeng

Groupon Inc., owner of the biggest coupon website, said it started an online group-buying service in China as consumers in the world’s fastest-growing major economy increase spending over the Internet.

The Gaopeng.com website will initially cover Beijing and Shanghai before expanding to other major Chinese cities, Chicago-based Groupon said in an e-mailed statement today. Tencent Holdings Ltd., China’s biggest Internet company, and Yunfeng Capital, a private equity fund started by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. Chairman Jack Ma, are other investors in Gaopeng, according to the statement, which didn’t provide details of the shareholding.

China had almost 19 million group-buying users at the end of 2010, according to government statistics.

Groupon’s Gaopeng.com will face competition in attracting Internet shoppers from Chinese group-buying services including Lashou.com, Meituan.com and Manzuo.com. Taobao, China’s largest consumer e-commerce website, launched a group-buying website last year and popular portal websites such as Tencent’s QQ and Sohu.com have also launched group-buying websites. Online retail sales in China almost doubled last year to 513.1 billion yuan ($78 billion) and will probably double again in the next two years to 1 trillion yuan, Xinhua News Agency reported Jan. 18.

Groupon, which rejected a $6 billion takeover bid from Google Inc. in December, plans to increase the number of employees at its China venture to 1,000 in three months from 120 staff, Danny Yeung, head of its Hong Kong unit, said Feb. 10.

Alibaba Group, controlled by Ma, is China’s biggest e- commerce company. The Hangzhou, eastern China-based company’s Alibaba.com Ltd. unit last week said David Wei resigned as Chief Executive Officer after an internal probe found more than 2,300 vendors used its website to defraud global buyers.

    Groupon

  • Chinese Man Lives With a knife in His Head for Four Years

Posted on February 19th, 2011 Administrator No comments

Chinese man had knife blade stuck in his head for four years. X-ray images show the knife resting behind the man's throat.

Chinese surgeons have removed a rusty, four-inch knife from the skull of a man who claimed it had been stuck in there for four years.

Li Fu, 37, had been suffering severe headaches, bad breath and breathing difficulties but never knew the cause of his discomfort.

An official at Yuxi City People’s Hospital in Yunnan Province said that Li told doctors he had been stabbed in the lower right jaw by a robber four years ago and the blade broke off inside his head without him realizing it.

Despite headaches, Stabbing victim Said he Was unaware of broken-off blade

“As time passed, I used injections to kill the pain in my head and ears,” Li told Chinese state TV. “It has been four years already.”

The rusty blade fortunately did not touch the brain artery nor facial nerves, keeping him narrowly alive.

“A miracle of miracles: A knife pierced his skull and stayed in the nerve and vascular intensive area,” said neurosurgeon Luo Zhiwei of the People’s Hospital. The blade entered through his right lower jaw, went past his tongue, nasopharynx and muscles and came to a rest with the tip almost touching his brain.

The four-inch rusty blade doctors removed from Li Fu's head

Doctors carried out a four-hour operation from 8:30 am to take out the 10-centimeter-long (4- inch), 1.8-centimeter-wide and 0.24-centimeter-thick blade.

“We checked his mouth, but no wound or scar has been found. It is very strange as to how the blade got into his head,” Xu Wen, an official at the hospital, told Chinese state TV.

While shocking, Li’s case is far from unusual.

In fact, one of Li’s countrymen once had to have a pair of scissors removed from his esophagus two years ago.

In April 2009, a Colorado man coughed up a nail that had been stuck up his nose for three decades.

Also in 2009, a 2-year-old Brazilian boy was found living with 50 sewing needles lodged throughout his body.

And back in 2004, doctors in France found 350 coins in a man’s stomach.

The incident serves as a reminder that people can and do survive head trauma with little or no disability.

  • Apple supplier report reveals grim truths behind gadgets

Posted on February 17th, 2011 Administrator No comments

Apple’s just-released progress report on the labor-related practices of its overseas parts suppliers reveals grim truths behind the making of such popular gadgets as the iPad and iPhone–including worker poisonings, child labor violations, and 60-plus-hour work weeks.

Apple supplier report details labor and safety woes

The Supplier Responsibility 2011 Progress Report (A pdf of the full report is available here), released just weeks after Apple logged record profits of $6 billion, marks the first time the company has officially acknowledged that 137 workers “suffered adverse health effects” at Wintek’s Suzhou factory in China (which supplies parts to Apple and Nokia) because of exposure to n-hexane, a toxic chemical in cleaning agents.

A report last year in the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper said at least 62 Suzhou workers had been hospitalized, while Wintek (联建科技) claimed that a factory death was the result of a heart attack, not n-hexane exposure. At that time, Nokia issued a statement denying that n-hexane was used on its production lines, while Apple declined to comment at all. (In its report, Apple now blames a reconfiguration of Wintek’s operations that failed to include changing the factory’s ventilation system.)

Long-term, high-level exposure to n-hexane can damage the peripheral nervous system and eventually the spinal cord, leading to weak and atrophied muscles, male infertility, and even paralysis. The chemical is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency owing not only to potential carcinogenic properties but also to environmental concerns. Apple says it will conduct a total re-audit of Wintek’s facility in 2011.

The Apple report also reveals that only 32 percent of audited facilities comply with the company’s maximum 60-hour, 6-day work week; in 2009, compliance was at 46 percent. In the U.S., 60-hour work weeks were deemed excessive in the 1880s, when factory workers pushed for 8-hour work days, according to a Business Week report. More recently, Apple has called 60-plus-hour work weeks “excessive” but 60-hour work weeks “normal,” according to this 2006 BBC report, while The New York Times found in 2007 that factories in China supplying corporations such as Wal-Mart, Disney, and Dell were forcing employees to work 16-hour days on fast-moving assembly lines.

Apple finds child labor in supplier report. A total of 91 workers under the age of 16 had been hired in 10 facilities

Meanwhile, Apple’s report finds that only 57 percent of facilities complied with Apple’s code on preventing working injuries, and less than 70 percent met standards on air emissions; environmental permits and reporting; and managing hazardous substances. The report also acknowledges finding 91 children working at 10 facilities, though the nearly nine-fold jump from the previous year’s findings of 11 children at 3 workplaces could be due to more robust facilities auditing. (After auditing 102 facilities in 2009, Apple audited 127 in 2010, many for the first time.)

Apple rather vaguely describes how it is addressing these issues, saying with regard to n-hexane that it is working to improve “poor management systems for Environmental Health and Safety.” As for child labor, Apple says it has “required the suppliers to support the young workers’ return to school and to improve their management systems–such as labor recruitment practices and age-verification procedures–to prevent recurrences.”

And finally, Apple reports that it is “disturbed and deeply saddened” by the 13 suicides or attempted suicides at Foxconn Technology’s Shenzhen factory over the course of five months. The first suicide involved a man who worked 286 hours the month prior, including 112 overtime hours (three times the legal limit), for about $1 an hour (including the higher overtime pay). That amounted to less than $300 over the course of the month–not quite enough to buy a 32GB iPhone 4. (Americans find the iPhone more affordable; within three days of launching the iPhone 4, Apple sold 1.7 million.) Foxconn (富士康科技集團), for its part, has since increased factory wages by 30 percent.

According to the report, after Apple COO Tim Cook and other executives traveled to the factory in June 2010, Apple asked for an independent review of conditions by suicide prevention experts. By August, Foxconn had hired psychological counselors, set up a 24-hour care center, and (rather morbidly) affixed large nets to the buildings to “prevent impulsive suicides.”

  • Shaolin Temple builds commerical empire

Posted on January 10th, 2011 Administrator No comments

Shi Yongxin, the abbot of the Shaolin temple in the central province of Henan, was awarded an SUV worth 1 million Yuan (US$150, 000) for his contributions to the local tourist industry in 2006

China’s famed Shaolin Temple has set up over 40 companies overseas as it hopes to spread Buddhist-inspired martial arts around the globe, state press reported.

But the announcement of a vast business plan to send the temple’s famed warrior monks abroad has been met with criticism over the commercialisation of Buddhism, the Global Times said on Monday.

NBA superstar center Shaquille O'Neal poses with Abbot Shi Yongxin during his promotional tour to the Shaolin Temple in Henan province in 2009

“We currently operate over 40 companies in cities across the world, such as Berlin and London,” the paper quoted Shi Yongxin, the temple’s 30th abbot, as saying at the 8th cultural industry forum at Peking University Saturday.

“The Shaolin Temple is also participating in the operation of some other companies related to the same industry,” he said, adding that the companies have bought land and property overseas.

As the first head of state to visit Shaolin temple, Russian then-President Vladimir Putin received a grand welcome by Abbot Shi Yongxin in 2006

Shi, the first Chinese monk to earn a master’s degree in business administration, denied the businesses were profit-motivated, insisting that the temple was fulfilling an overseas infatuation with “Shaolin culture”, it said.

The temple, which was established in 495 AD, is known as the birthplace of Zen Buddhism and Chinese kung fu.

Shaolin Temple in central China's Henan Province is the birthplace of Chinese kung fu

Shaolin warrior monks have held legendary status for centuries throughout Asia, while over the last 50 years films and television have spread their reputation worldwide.

Besides teaching martial arts around the world, the Shaolin centres also include Zen meditation workshops and Chinese language training, Shi said.

The temple has nearly 130 martial arts clubs in the United States alone, while Shaolin monks are already capable of teaching in English, German and Spanish, he said.

Shaolin Temple launched its first overseas Shaolin Kung Fu Cultural Center in Vienna, Austria on June 3, 2004

Shi, known as the “CEO of Shaolin” since taking over the temple a decade ago, has developed commercial ventures such as kung fu shows, film production and online merchandise sales. He established Warrior Monks Group to perform in 1989. He set up Henan Shaolinsi Television Co in 1997 and Shaolin Temple Industrial Development Company in 1998. His was the first Buddhist temple to open a website.

The movie Shaolin (新少林寺) started filming in Shaolin Temple On October, 22, 2009. Martial monks tried to obstruct the passage of reporters.

Last year he denied the temple planned to participate in an initial public offering with a Hong Kong travel company, while a Beijing court turned down an application to put a Shaolin trademark on consumer goods like instant noodles.

Shi’s business efforts have been widely criticised as a naked attempt to commercialise Buddhism, the report said.

“To many people, a temple is a reclusive place outside the bustles of the material world,” but “when a monk like Shi travels frequently by plane to promote his businesses, secular society cannot keep up,” the paper said in an editorial.

“While spreading ideas has been the traditional theme of most religions, Shaolin’s ventures abroad also help China spread its traditional culture and thinking, and gain more understanding through a civil channel.”

  • Coolest Job Opening – 12 global finalists vie for chance to be Panda Ambassador

Posted on September 27th, 2010 Administrator 1 comment

Global competition for panda keepers enters final round!!!

Twelve semi-finalists have begun training for one of the world’s most coveted jobs – “pambassador” (panda ambassador) – at a research base in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

Chriszelda Pieterse, a finalist hoping to become a "pambassador", looks for Zhenzhen, a star panda, during the training program in Chengdu, China

Hailing from Sweden, South Africa, Japan, the United States and other countries, the finalists are the lucky few remaining from a pool of more than 60,000 hopefuls who had applied for the rare chance to work as a panda keeper for one month.

They will be trained on how to feed the pandas, interact with cubs, and monitor their growth.

Candidate Annie-Danielle Grenier, who hails from Canada, said that she likes the new task and feels completely homely. “I love to cook for my family and friends, and it’s not much different cooking for pandas. The ingredients are different but it’s exactly the same, and I cook with love when I cook for my family and it’s the same for the pandas”.

“It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to actually come here to work with pandas. This is like the most amazing experience I ever had” said Ashley Robertson from Alabama of the United States.

The six winners of the competition, organized by the base and conservation group WWF, will be chosen on September 29 based on how well they look after the pandas, understand conservation, and how good their communication skills are.

  • Bird’s Nest tightrope walker sets record

Posted on July 5th, 2010 Administrator 1 comment

A Chinese tightrope walker Adili Wuxor secures a place in the record books for longest time walking on a wire, suspended high in the National Stadium in Beijing (aka Bird’s Nest stadium). In order to break the record, Adili had lived in a 9-square-meter cabin on the roof of the Bird’s Nest stadium during the past 60 days, walking five hours per day on the 3cm thick steel cables, which were hanging a perilous 60m in the air.

But his Guinness world record claimed last week was not actually recognized by the London-based Guinness World Records. Instead, the certificate he so proudly received came from Shanghai Great World, which is not part of Guinness World Records.

Guinness said the record was held by Jorge Ojeda-Guzman of the U.S. state of Florida, who spent 205 days on a wire 11 meters (36 ft) long and 10.7 meters (35 ft) above ground between January 1 and July 25, 1993.

The Bird’s Nest was the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies and the track and field events for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Wuxor, an ethnic Uighur from the far western region of Xinjiang, says he’s ready to take on a new challenge in October: to walk on a tightrope from an island off the southern city of Xiamen to the shore.

  • Shanghai unveils ‘stronger’ version of Wall Street charging bull

Italian-US artist Arturo Di Modica's Charging Bull statue is seen at the Bund after its unveiling in Shanghai

Shanghai unveiled a new landmark on its Bund waterfront over the weekend, a bronze bull sculpture inspired by Wall Street’s “Charging Bull” representing China’s rising financial ambitions.

American artist Arturo Di Modica — the sculptor behind the New York bull who also created its Shanghai sibling — was at the unveiling on Saturday.

The "Charging Bull" statue, sometimes called the Wall Street Bull by Arturo Di Modica in New York

At 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) tall and 2.5 tons (2.7 tons), the Shanghai sculpture was the same size as the Wall Street version, but “redder, younger and stronger, It’s a mixture of Western and Chinese cultures,” said Di Modica, adding he was inspired by both the “Charging Bull” and the Chinese Zodiac’s ox.

The animal’s confident stance represented a bullish and prosperous future for the rising financial center, he said.

The Shanghai officials who commissioned the sculpture had previously said they wanted their bull to weigh twice as much the one on Wall Street.

The city requested a bull that was younger and stronger than New York City’s bull to symbolize “the energy of Shanghai’s economy, that’s why the head of the Bund’s bull looks up while the Wall Street Bull looks downward,”said the head of Huangpu district

In the early 20th century, the neo-classical buildings along the Bund were known as the “Wall Street of Asia” and giants born there include the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp., or HSBC, and insurers American International Group, or AIG.

  • Tibetan Mastiff: New Must-Have Luxury for China’s Wealthy Elite

Posted on April 17th, 2010 Administrator No comments

Tibetan Mastiff - Slobbery dog becomes latest status symbol among China's wealthy elite

China’s latest must-have luxury for the ultra-rich, to go with mansions and sports cars, is a large, slobbery dog with massive amounts of hair best known for herding sheep and guarding Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Tibetan Mastiffs (also known as Do-khyi) are large and fierce, reaching a height of up to 31 inches (80cm) and a weight of 176 lbs (80kg).

From the frozen steppes and remote monasteries of Tibet to the gated communities of China's urban rich, this guardian dog has come a long way.

Once condemned and banned as a bourgeois folly, pet ownership is booming in China, and the Tibetan mastiff  is the dog of the moment for those who want to spread their wealth beyond stocks and real estate.

You Wenfa, owner of a mastiff breeding farm on the outskirts of Beijing, saw potential profits from the enormous hounds and purchased his first dog in the early 1990s.

You currently has over 40 dogs and goes back to Tibet every year to seek prospective additions to his stock.

He also provides breeding services and charges up to 100,000 yuan ($14,650) for a session with one of his pedigrees.

“This is like a car. You drive a German Mercedes or BMW and I drive a Chinese Xiali or mini van. Everybody has their own choices,” said You.

“These dogs at the moment are a kind of choice for status and wealth,” said You, whose pure breed mastiffs can fetch up to 300,000 yuan each.

“I can understand racehorses and diamonds, but I don’t understand why someone would want to pay half a million dollars for a dog, In the US, $5,000 is the upper limit for a show quality puppy.” said Martha Feltenstein, president of the American Tibetan Mastiff Association. “They have a relatively short life expectancy and are not especially rare, so it’s quite puzzling why they are fetching such a high price in China.”

In the U.S., Tibetan mastiff pups can be bought for as little as several hundred dollars, Feltenstein said.

A black Tibetan Mastiff called Yangtze River Number Two is believed to have broken the world record as the most expensive dog, having been sold to a Chinese woman for a reported $582,000 in 2009.

    • The most expensive dog cost $582,000

Tibetan mastiffs hit the headlines last year when a young woman named as Ms Wang in China’s western Shaanxi province paid 4 million yuan ($582,000) for a mastiff cumbersomely named Yangtze River Number Two.

In keeping with its status the dog — 18 months old and 80cm high — arrived at its new owner’s home in stupendous style. According to local reports, a motorcade of 30 black Mercedes-Benz and other luxury cars cruised to the airport in Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province, to take delivery of Yangtze, and a throng gathered to fête the arrival of the city’s new resident after Ms Wang returned from buying it in Yushu county, Qinghai province in north-west China, home to many ethnic Tibetans and the epicenter of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake this Wednesday (April 14, 2010).

The award-winning Tibetan Mastiff "Red Lion" from Lhasa is worth $1.47 million.

    • Tibetan Mastiff “Red Lion” worth $1.47 million

Yangtze however lost its top-dog status in April this year as the award-winning mastiff Red Lion was snapped up for $1.47 million (10 million yuan) after it won the grand championship at a mastiff exhibition held in Chengdu.

“I bought it at 480,000 yuan in 2009 when it was half a year old. My dog is a pure Tibetan mastiff, with its family tree confirmed by the authorities. Strong and majestic, it was spotlit among China’s 200 top mastiffs taking part in the preliminary contest,” said He Guangyin, the dog’s owner who lives in Lhasa.

“Red lion,” male, eats one kg of fresh beef and other quality food every day as it is in the growth period, He noted.

He said that 200,000 yuan is charged now for a successful breeding with his mastiff.

Among the must-haves for rich men in northeast China, the Xinhua News Agency recently said, was a young beautiful wife, a Lamborghini and a Tibetan mastiff, "the bigger and more ferocious the better."

    • New status symbol

After splurging on real estate in Australia, American thoroughbreds and European designer fashions, China’s rich see the Tibetan mastiffs as a new status symbol. China is now home to an estimated 825,000 millionaires, its most in modern history, and its luxury goods market is one of the fastest growing in the world. Among the must-haves for rich men in northeast China, the official Xinhua News Agency recently said was a young beautiful wife, a Lamborghini and a Tibetan mastiff, “the bigger and more ferocious the better.”

“You could call it a local luxury brand,” said Rupert Hoogewerf, a Shanghai-based tax specialist who who compiles a popular annual list of China’s richest people. “Luxury brands are growing at phenomenal rates in China and owning a Tibetan mastiff is another channel for increasing your credibility and showing off your rich status.”

The mastiffs, themselves, look like money, resembling a lion that is a traditional symbol of good fortune.

“We want a breed of dog that is home grown, and this guardian dog is perfect because it is also a symbol of good luck for Chinese people throughout history,” said Wu Yunliang, the owner of “Warren Buffett” and nearly 20 other mastiffs. He keeps them in the northern city of Taiyuan where he owns a nursing home.

Hundreds of the hairy dogs were on hand, and owners and handlers marched the most expensive ones down catwalks during the annual China Tibetan Mastiff Expo in Beijing as though they were fashion models. Some carried the names of wealthy Americans like "Warren Buffett," while others were called "Obama" and "Son of Bush".

    • Breeder standards

Potential profits from mastiff breeding are what drew Sui Huizheng, the businessman-breeder, who said he isn’t a dog lover. “I don’t touch or play with them much,” Sui said. He leaves the brushing and fluffing of his dogs to nearly a dozen handlers.

Passers-by were told only to admire the dogs from afar and not get near them because they’re hostile to strangers — all the better for protecting flocks and herders on the isolated Tibetan plateau, where they originated.

Retired track coach Ma Junren became fascinated with the mastiffs when he was training female distance runners on the Tibetan plateau in the late 1980s. Ma claimed the high-altitude training and concoctions of turtle blood and caterpillar fungus he fed the runners helped them set world records. But some of his athletes were later caught using banned performance-boosting substances. Ma retired, denying wrongdoing.

At the annual China Tibetan Mastiff Expo, he exhorted breeders to raise their standards so that China can gain entry to the World Canine Organization (Fédération Cynologique Internationale), an international federation of kennel clubs. The organization has so far kept China out over lax controls on vaccinations, several breeders said.

“I hope all our Tibetan mastiff lovers are honest. We don’t want to see thieves, criminals or cheaters around us,” Ma said.

  • Fastest Ferrari (599 GTO) to debut at Beijing Auto Show

Posted on April 9th, 2010 Administrator No comments

Ferrari 599 GTO tops out at 208 mph, fastest on-road Ferrari ever

The fastest road-going Ferrari in history, the 599 GTO, is set to be unveiled at the Beijing Auto  Show later this month, aimed at the company’s most exclusive customers.

It is billed as a limited edition new concept that draws inspiration and technology from the company’s experimental 599XX racer.

With a 208mph top speed and 661bhp V12 engine the GTO is capable of lapping Ferrari’s Fiorano test track in a record 1 minute 24 seconds – that beats the time set by the company’s Enzo supercar by almost a second.

Six-litre V12 engine will propel Ferrari 599 GTO from 0-60mph in 3.4 seconds

Only 599 examples of the new GTO (which stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, meaning a grand-touring car homologated — approved — for racing) will be built, with prices expected to be around $460,000.

For that customers will get a 6.0-litre engine coupled to a six-speed paddle-shift gearbox capable of launching the 1,495kg (3300 lbs.) berlinetta from a standstill to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds.

A new generation of Ferrari’s carbon ceramic brakes will be on hand to slow proceedings down, while aerodynamic cues taken from the race car and tyres developed especially for the GTO by Michelin promise extraordinary levels of grip.

670bhp coupe only available to 599 Ferrari customers

And if the G-Forces aren’t enough to tell you how fast you’re traveling, then the latest Ferrari also gets Virtual Race Engineer – an in-car system that gives the driver instantaneous information on the car’s performance.

    Ferrari 250 GTO

    Ferrari 288 GTO

The GTO badge has only been used two other times in Ferrari history. The 250 GTO of the 1960s was built off the short-wheelbase 250 GT and used for GT racing. In the mid-1980s, Ferrari created the 288 GTO (based on the 308 GTB) for Group B racing. Both cars were produced in limited numbers, just enough, in fact, to make them eligible for racing.

The Beijing auto show opens to the public on April 27 by which time Ferrari is expecting all GTOs to be accounted for.

  • China Property Bubble: Ghost Town of Kangbashi in Ordos

Posted on April 2nd, 2010 Administrator 1 comment

    All Quiet
The Kangbashi district began as a public-works project in Ordos, a wealthy coal-mining town in Inner Mongolia, China. A public-works project worthy of Kubla Khan’s “stately pleasure-dome,” The area  is filled with office towers, administrative centers, government buildings, museums, theaters and sports fields—not to mention acre on acre of subdivisions overflowing with middle-class duplexes and bungalows. The only problem: the district was originally designed to house, support and entertain 1 million people, yet hardly anyone lives there.

    Empty
Six years ago, Ordos county officials decided to move their headquarters out of old, cramped Dongsheng and into land that was then occupied by two small villages inhabited by about 1,400 people. By the end of 2008, the new district of Kangbashi was crisscrossed with 2.4 billion yuan ($352 million) worth of roads.  Though many of the properties in Kangbashi have been sold and a million people were projected to be living in Kangbashi by 2010, the city is still empty.

    Vacant
Mostly empty apartment buildings in Kangbashi, a half hour down the road is Dongsheng, where most of Ordos’ 1.5 million resident call home.

    Wealth and Knowledge

    No Sale

    Unfinished

    On the Rise
Construction projects in Kangbashi continue despite the lack of occupancy.

    From a Distance
Kangbashi awaits residents to bring the district, meant for a population the size of San Diego, California, to life.
