Travel east past Buckingham Palace, well beyond Piccadilly Circus, even farther out than St. Paul’s Cathedral. You get to a place in London that most tourists — indeed, most Brits — have never been.

And yet, this summer, 4 billion people from around the world will be transfixed on this neighborhood, a once industrial wasteland now home to London’s elegant new Olympic Park.

The sleek architecture and vast infrastructure are reshaping this region from one of London’s poorest to one of its most progressive. Nearly 9 million visitors will see the transformation firsthand in late July, when the XXX Summer Olympic Games get under way.

I’ll likely not be among them. Though I’m a huge fan of the Olympics, I’ve never been tempted to take in the games in person — too expensive, too crowded, too difficult to negotiate.

So instead of visiting London’s Olympic venues this summer, with hundreds of thousands of others, I checked them out in the fall — as finishing touches were being made to the arenas and stadiums, green spaces and train stations.

Now, I can hardly wait until late July, when I’ll watch my favorite events — on TV — and be able to say: I saw that. I’ve been there.

Olympic Park is center of action

While the events of the London Olympics will be spread across the region — tennis at Wimbledon, rowing at Windsor, horse jumping at Greenwich Park — the heart of the games will be the Olympic Park, a 500-acre space about eight miles northeast of Parliament and Westminster Abbey.

This is where the opening and closing ceremonies will be staged, where track-and-field and swimming events will take place, where Olympic athletes will stay, and where the Olympic flame will burn from Thursday, July 27, to Sunday, Aug. 12.

Decades of downturn in Straford, London's poor East End, has given way to the Olympics

This is also where — not far from here, anyway — young, disaffected Londoners clashed with police in riots that attracted worldwide attention last summer.

This summer, the attention will be for a different reason: Thousands of the world’s most impressive athletes will gather to determine who is the very best in each sport.

The area was chosen to bring some economic prosperity to an area of London that could use some investment. And investment it’s getting: The Olympic Delivery Authority, the agency in charge of building the games’ infrastructure, will spend more than $9 billion in public money before it’s all over (and no, not all Londoners are happy about the expenditure).

An aerial view of The Olympic Park in London

Several buildings inside the park are destined to become memorable images of the games:

Olympic Stadium(1), which will hold opening and closing ceremonies as well as track-and-field events, is an engineering marvel, with 80,000 seats –– 55,000 of which will be removed after the games to give the stadium greater utility in its post-Olympics life. Food vendors will be set up outside the stadium to eliminate the need for costly kitchen facilities; temporary restrooms will be self-contained in recycled shipping containers. “There’s nothing there that doesn’t need to be,” said Julianne Marriott, a guide with the Olympic Development Authority, which leads weekend tours of the park.

Inside of the Aquatic Centre, designed by Pritzker Architecture Winner Zaha Hadid, in London

    • In terms of aesthetic appeal, the Aquatics Centre(6) has earned the most accolades, for its sleek, curvaceous design. Designed by Iraqi-born, London-based Zaha Hadid, whose works also include Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art (2003) in Cincinnati , Guangzhou Opera House (2010) in China, the Maxxi in Rome (2010), and Evelyn Grace Academy (2010) in Brixton, the building’s shape evokes an immense manta ray, coursing through the water. Many observers think it has been marred by two “wings” erected on either side of the main building, temporary additions to hold thousands of extra spectators for swimming and diving events. They, too, will be removed after the games.

    • Two other buildings of note: the Velodrome(3), another visual stunner, will host track cycling events (it’s been dubbed the “Pringle” for its potato-chip-like curving roof); and the Basketball Arena(4), a completely temporary facility that will be dismantled after the games. Why? “Because the British are rubbish at basketball,” said Victoria Herriott, who leads walking tours around the perimeter of the park. “The only sport that makes any money in England is soccer.”

The arena may be sent to Rio de Janeiro for use in the 2016 games.

The ArcelorMittal Orbit, a teetering tower planned for the 2012 Olympic Games, is set to become the largest work of public art in the United Kingdom

    • Finally, what may become the single most recognizable symbol of London’s Olympics: A bright-red, twisting piece of metal called the Orbit will become England’s largest piece of public art. The 375-foot-high tower is made out of recycled steel, a funky, free-form version of the Olympic rings, designed by British sculptor Anish Kapoor (who also designed Cloud Gate, aka “the Bean,” in Chicago’s Millennium Park). The $25 million creation is being paid for by ArcelorMittal, the largest steel producing company in the world headquartered in Avenue de la Liberté, Luxembourg.

There’s no function in this piece at all — save giving VIPs a place to have a drink and survey the park. It’s designed to draw visitors to the area after the games have finished. “You have to have more than stadiums to bring visitors here,” said Herriott. And though she initially didn’t care for its design, she said, “It’s grown on me.”

She told our group to delay judgment, reminding us that even the Eiffel Tower was initially panned by Parisians.

Planning for use after the Olympics

The future use of space was a theme brought up again and again during the two tours I took of the park in November. Indeed, the Olympic Park Legacy Committee’s entire purpose is to ensure that the investment does not turn into one massive white elephant.

Lasting signs of improvement to the region are already apparent in every direction: The River Lea, which flows south through the park to the Thames, has been scrubbed, as has surrounding marshland.

There was a lot to clean up.

This used to be London’s industrial heartland, where chemical plants, scrap yards, slaughterhouses and “anything smelly” was located, according to Marriott, because the area was downwind from where wealthy Londoners lived (and still live). The Germans bombed the area heavily during World War II. And then last summer, rioters threatened to perpetuate the abuse, spreading their looting to several East London neighborhoods (the bulk of disorder occurred in the North London neighborhood of Tottenham, following the police killing of an unarmed man there on Aug. 4).

In the eight days I spent touring London, the only time I felt at all unsafe was as I wandered through this neighborhood, mostly because the place seemed so deserted. I got turned around as I searched for a subway station after a tour, and there was no one nearby to ask for directions.

    That, no doubt, will change.

Plans are in the works for the addition of 2,800 new homes on the parkland — which will be renamed Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park after the games — plus a retirement community, new school and more. British Prime Minister David Cameron has talked about taking advantage of the technology being invested at the media/broadcast center and turning the entire area into a private-sector tech hub when the games are finished.

“This isn’t about just two weeks of sport,” said Herriott.

Four thousand newly planted trees will give the area a true parklike look; 30 new pedestrian bridges will transport visitors across the canals and waterways that cut through the land.

Despite all the newness, a bit of history is still on display. Herriott’s tour led us past Three Mill Island, a historic former mill that now functions as London’s largest film studio. On the afternoon of our walk, auditions were being conducted for the games’ opening ceremonies, which are being overseen by English filmmaker Danny Boyle, the director of “Slumdog Millionaire.”

Herriott predicted it would be less elaborate than the over-the-top, four-hour affair of 2008 in Beijing that featured 15,000 performers. “I’m sure, with our quirky British style, it will be spectacular,” she said.

She also predicted it would be relatively concise, especially if the queen is in attendance, as she is expected to be. “She can only stay up so late,” Herriott said of the monarch, who turns 86 in the spring.

After the opening ceremonies, the stadium will be shuttered for a week until the track-and-field events, one of the games’ big draws, get started, on Friday, Aug. 3.

    Largest McDonald’s in the world

Another big draw: the world’s largest McDonald’s, which is being built at Olympic Park. The 32,000-square-foot hamburger palace will seat up to 1,500. McDonald’s, a longtime Olympics sponsor, will have four restaurants at the park, a fact that has prompted some jeers from healthy-eating advocates. Other sponsors include Cadbury, Visa, BP and Coca-Cola.

“If you turn up in a Burger King or Pepsi T-shirt, will you be asked to turn it inside out?” asked Herriott, and it wasn’t clear whether she was joking or not.

Private investment is flooding the neighborhoods adjacent to Olympic Park as well. Europe’s largest shopping mall, Westfield Stratford City, opened last fall within walking distance of the park. Inside: 300 stores spread across four floors, including some familiar names to American shoppers: Foot Locker, Forever 21 and Krispy Kreme; as well as more authentically British options: Marks & Spencer, Twinings and Dorothy Perkins.

We spent the most time at John Lewis, a U.K. department store that offers an official Olympics store on the third floor. I was prepared to spend a big percentage of my souvenir allowance here, but couldn’t get excited about those odd-looking Olympic mascots — one-eyed creatures Wenlock and Mandeville — decorating much of the official merchandise. I was much more impressed with the store’s floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Olympic Park and all of East London.

    Worries about transit and security

Stratford, with its two train stations, will be the gateway to the Olympics for a majority of visitors. All event-goers will receive a free one-day transportation card with their tickets — and those cards are likely to be used: There will be no car parking at Olympic Park for able-bodied visitors, according to Herriott.

Though its location is off the tourist track, the park isn’t hard to get to; it is served by 10 public transit lines. It’s a 20-minute ride from central London. Visitors coming from continental Europe via the Eurostar high-speed train can connect to Stratford from St. Pancras International railway station in seven minutes, thanks to the new high-speed Javelin line.

Is it enough? Londoners aren’t sure. On busy days, more than 100,000 visitors will descend on Olympic Park, stressing an already overworked public transportation system.

Security is the other issue causing concern.

The British government announced last month the addition of 13,500 military personnel to the thousands of private guards and local police who will patrol Olympic venues. In addition, the Royal Navy’s largest ship, the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean, will be based on the Thames in nearby Greenwich, just a few miles from Olympic Park.

Still, said Herriott, “They only have to get lucky once.”

No Londoner can forget the week in early July 2005, when the city got word that it would host the 2012 Summer Games, besting bids from Paris, New York, Madrid and Moscow. The very day after the announcement, terrorists set off four bombs in the London Underground, killing 52.

That was more than six years ago, and the city has been spared any similarly serious incidents.

Today, there’s more excitement than apprehension. Main events have been sold out for months, and taxpaying Londoners, who have largely paid for the games, are grousing mostly because they weren’t awarded more tickets.

Herriott told the Brits on our tour that the lack of a ticket is no reason not to share in the excitement of the Olympics this summer.

Several events — including the marathon, road cycling and triathlon — can be viewed for free and don’t require a ticket. “There’s no excuse to say you haven’t seen an Olympic event,” she told us.

And she almost had me convinced.

    Visiting London for Olympics

This summer, London will become the only city to host the Olympics three times. The British capital first welcomed the world’s top athletes in 1908, after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius caused planned host Rome to pull out. London hosted again in 1948, the first Olympics following a 12-year hiatus caused by World War II.

London also was instrumental in the creation of the Paralympic Games, the competition for athletes with physical disabilities that immediately follows the Olympics. The precursor to the Paralympics, initially held for injured servicemen, was first held in London in 1948. This year’s Paralympics run Wednesday, Aug. 29, through Sunday, Sept. 9.

Tickets to events: Ticket sales began last year, and many events are sold out. Some early rounds of competition, however, still have availability, including table tennis, handball, weightlifting and volleyball. CoSport is the official ticket sales agent in the United States; or, take your chances in the resale market.

For travelers with deep pockets, CoSport has packages available that include tickets to top events, plus hospitality passes. For example, a package including a ticket to the gymnastics finals (on Sunday, Aug. 5), tickets to shooting and boxing events the following day and a hospitality pass was available for $2,500.

Remember, too, that some events are free and don’t require a ticket — including the marathon, triathlon and road cycling.

Tour the area: The Olympic Delivery Authority offers free bus tours inside Olympic Park grounds on weekends. Reservations are required, sometimes far in advance. For information: london2012.com or 011-44-300-2012-001.

Blue Badge Guides offer several different walking tours near Olympic Park (these tours are not allowed to go inside the park). Price for the basic, two-hour tour is 9 pounds (about $14), cash only. Information: tourguides2012.co.uk.

If you’re not interested in a formal tour but want to look at the Olympic grounds, check out the View Tube, a kind of informal visitors center with great views of Olympic Park. The View Tube, in a recycled shipping container, is located along the Greenway, a 4-mile-long walk-and-bike trail that travels along the southern perimeter of Olympic Park. For information: theviewtube.co.uk.

Getting to England: Travel to London during the Olympic weeks is expected to be a headache — and an expensive one at that. Round-trip flights to London Heathrow in late July from Cleveland are running about $1,400 (and up). Travel experts do not expect that figure to go down. Best advice: If you’re sure you want to go, book soon.

Where to stay: First, the good news: The city still has plenty of rooms available during the Olympics. Now the bad: Expect to pay a premium for even a modest room. London & Partners, the city’s tourism bureau, has a search function that shows availability across the region during late July and early August.

Remember, too, that price gouging during big events sometimes backfires and hotels find themselves lowering rates as the event nears. If you’re willing to take that risk, you might find better deals closer to summer.

The closest hotels to Olympic Park include three at Westfield Stratford Centre mall: a Premier Inn; and a Holiday Inn and Staybridge Suites, both of which are opening this summer. More information: london2012.com

  • 2012 London Olympic Venues Guide with An Interactive Map

Posted on January 1st, 2012 Administrator No comments

2012 will be a remarkable one for London. Over the summer, it will celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s diamond jubilee, marking her 60 years on the throne. And then, of course, the world’s most extraordinary show will arrive in London. When London hosts the Games of the XXX Olympiad from July 27 – August 12, 2012, it will become the first city to stage the Olympics three times (Athens and Paris have hosted the Summer Games twice, and Lake Placid and St. Moritz have held the Olympic Winter Games twice.)

London also hosted the Games in 1908 and 1948, and both times played a vital role in the development of the modern Olympic movement. Sixty-four years later, London will confront a different type of challenge – following the majestic Beijing Games. London will have no such fiscal luxury, but it does have several other things going for it – principally the ability to integrate historic sites and venues with fresh locales.

An Interactive Map of London 2012 Olympic Venues

Horse Guards Parade will be the venue for the Olympic Beach Volleyball Games in London

Tennis will be played on Wimbledon‘s prestigious lawns . Beach volleyball – one of the Olympics’ newer sensations – will be held at the Horse Guards Parade in the heart of ceremonial London. Hyde Park, steeped in 400 years of history, will host triathlon. The World Heritage Site of Greenwich Park in south-east London will feature Olympic equestrian events and elements of the modern pentathlon. Competitors will take part in equestrian cross country through the park followed by dressage and jumping in an arena in front of the 17th Century Queen’s House.

North Greenwich Arena (aka O2 Arena or Millennium Dome ) will host Artistic Gymnastics, Trampoline Gymnastics and the Basketball finals during the Summer Games

Wembley Stadium, famed for its giant 440 ft high arch, will host soccer finals

Designed by Foster and Partners and Populous (then HOK Sport), Wembley Stadium in the London Borough of Brent is the biggest of the six stadiums staging the London 2012 Olympic Games soccer competition. It will host the gold medal events in both the Men’s and Women’s competition. The 90000 capacity venue is the second largest stadium in Europe, and serves as England’s national stadium.A signature feature of the stadium, following on from the old Wembley’s distinctive Twin Towers, is the 134 metres (440 ft) high Wembley Arch. With a span of 317 metres (1040 ft), this steel arch is the longest single span roof structure in the world. The stadium was built by Australian firm Multiplex at a cost of £798 million

London 2012 Olympic Marathon will takes runners past many of London’s most famous sights, including Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament

The London 2012 Olympic Marathon will start and finish on The Mall with a circuit of St. James’ Park, followed by three eight-mile loops (13 kilometers) around various landmarks including Trafalgar Square, Admiralty Arch, Birdcage Walk, St Paul’s Cathedral, Leadenhall, Tower Hill, London Eye, Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. The race has the spectacular backdrop of Buckingham Palace for the race finish. There will be some Special Viewing areas along the course, which will require tickets, but for most of the course the public will be able to view both the Men’s and Women’s Olympic Marathon event for FREE.

London's sustainable Olympic stadium has been made from materials 75 percent lighter than steel, the most common material used to build other stadiums

As for the new, London’s Olympic Park in Stratford, east London – an area that was heavily bombed during World War II and has recently been industrially contaminated land – is the largest urban development in more than a century. The Olympic Park will be the site of the new 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium, designed by American firm Populous (formerly known as HOK Sport) in collaboration with the British architect Peter Cook,  which will host track and field and the opening and closing ceremonies. The London Olympic Stadium is purportedly the most sustainable ever built. It has been made from materials 75 percent lighter than steel, the most common material used to build other stadiums. Low-carbon concrete was used in its construction, which contains 40 percent less carbon than usual. Steel and concrete use was reduced further by designing the lower part of the stadium in a bowl in the ground. The Stadium is on an “island” site – surrounded by waterways on three sides. Spectators will be able to reach it via five bridges that connect it to the surrounding area. The 80,000-seat venue will be reduced to 25,000 post-Games with its upper bowl can be detached and its materials recycled.

London 2012’s jaw-dropping centrepiece, the £269m Aquatis Center was designed by Iraq-born British architect Zaha Hadid and features a wave-like roof

The signature venue of the Games – designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Zaha Hadid and nicknamed the “stingray,” – should be the new Aquatics Centre, also housed in Olympic Park. The pool cost 269 million pounds ($439 million) in total. Diving and swimming will be held here, with water polo in a separate arena.  Organizers are calling it the “gateway” to the Park, and in an effort to blend form and function, it will feature a wave-like roof that is likely to provide one of the lasting architectural images of the Games.

The sports program itself will have two notable absences from the Beijing Games, as baseball and softball have been dropped from the Olympic slate. No new sports have been added, though several new disciplines will be contested. Primary additions include women’s boxing for the first time at an Olympics, and a re-configuring of the track cycling program. In Beijing, there were seven track cycling events for men and three for women; each gender will have five track cycling events in London. Also, tennis has added a mixed doubles competition.

Posted on March 3rd, 2010 Administrator No comments

  • China fans ask, will Yao Ming’s baby be American?

Posted on March 3rd, 2010 Administrator No comments

Yao’s personal life is closely followed by his many fans at home, from his 2007 Shanghai wedding to fellow basketball player Ye Li to last month’s reports the couple is expecting a baby girl in July.

The unborn child has already captured the public imagination in China, with fans trying to guess how tall he or she will eventually grow to be.

Both Mr Yao, 7’6″ tall (2.25 meter), and his wife Ye Li, 6’2″ (1.9-meter), are basketball players. Mr Yao, 29,  plays for the Houston Rockets NBA team while His wife is a former center for China. Both of Mr Yao’s parents were also basketball players. “This child will be a third generation basketball star!” wrote one anonymous commentator on a Chinese internet forum, with relish.

For the past few months, the couple have been in Shanghai, where Mr Yao has been recovering from a broken foot that has ended his NBA season.

Yao’s baby would automatically be an American citizen if born in the U.S. She also could claim Chinese citizenship as the child of Chinese nationals. However, Chinese law does not recognize dual citizenship.

The couple’s return to the US could deprive China of a future talent, according to some nervous fans, if the child gets an American passport. “This will not only be a huge loss to Chinese basketball, but as far as feelings are concerned, also something very difficult for Chinese fans to accept,” said the Chongqing Business Daily newspaper.

However, one internet commentator from Shanghai, named Kekeweiqi, wrote: “We have no right to interfere in the future of baby Yao. When baby Yao grows up, he or she will have the right to choose his or her own nationality and occupation.”

“Yao Ming is an individual, not a political tool,” said one comment on popular basketball Web site Hoop China. “He has the right to choose where his child is born and what kinds of medical care and education will be available to her. His child’s citizenship has nothing to do with loyalty.”

“Only an idiot would pass up American citizenship,” said another fan on online portal sina.com, underscoring the common belief in China that life overseas is preferable.

Yao and his camp have been tightlipped on the pregnancy and have not issued any public statements on the matter. It was not clear if Yao and his wife were indeed planning to have the baby in the U.S. or how they would handle any citizenship issues.

Yao spokesman Zhang Mingji declined to comment on the baby, saying it was a private matter. He said Yao was still recovering from his injury and was returning to the U.S. to continue treatment.

A number of Chinese celebrities — including actor Jet Li, actress Gong Li– have in recent years been criticized for becoming naturalized citizens of other countries (Both Jet Li and Gong Li have taken up Singapore citizenship). Chinese are subject to stringent visa requirements and some of the celebrities argued it was easier to travel internationally with passports from countries like Singapore or the U.S.

  • NBA All Star Marbury signs up for China League

Posted on January 18th, 2010 Administrator 2 comments

Former NBA All-Star Stephon Marbury signs with Chinese team

Twice NBA All Star point guard Stephon Marbury will become the highest profile American to play in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) after he agreed to join China’s  Shanxi Club.

The 32-year-old, a free agent since leaving the Boston Celtics last season, had agreed a deal with the northern club and would arrive in Shanxi next week, the team announced on their official website (www.sxcba.com).

“The aim of signing Marbury is to pay back our fans and try to win more games in the rest of the season,” said Shanxi boss Wang Xingjiang.

The 2001 and 2003 NBA All Star was expected to help boost Shanxi’s ticket sales as well as their chances of making the playoffs. Shanxi is currently 15th in the 17-team league.

Wang added that Marbury’s salary would not be too high because the former New Jersey Nets and Phoenix Suns player wanted to promote his personal shoe brand, Starbury,  in China.

Starbury is a shoe and clothing brand endorsed by NBA players Stephon Marbury and Ben Wallace

Shanxi last season hired former NBA player Bonzi Wells, who scored as many as 50 points a game. The contract ended after less than two months when Wells went on holiday but failed to return on time.

The International Basketball League, a spring basketball league composed primarily of teams based in North America, said on its Web site that Shanxi Zhongyu would participate in the I.B.L.’s 2010 season, playing its first game May 14 in Oregon.

The 32-year-old Marbury, a two-time All-Star,  played 13 seasons in the NBA with Minnesota, New Jersey, Phoenix, New York and Boston. He averaged 19.3 points in his career.

He played 23 games with the Celtics last season after a messy split from the Knicks.

He began last season with the Knicks before Coach Mike D’Antoni effectively exiled him from the organization. D’Antoni placed Marbury on the inactive list to start the season, and after the team became beset with injuries, Marbury declined D’Antoni’s offer to play.

Marbury reached a buyout near the end of the season and joined theBoston Celtics. He played scant minutes there.

The Celtics offered Marbury a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum after the season. He declined, saying he wanted to take a year off to pursue business interests.

  • Top 10 stories of China sports in 2009

Posted on December 31st, 2009 Administrator 2 comments

We take a look back at the big ten of China sports in 2009 as well as the year’s leading sports movers and shakers.

    (1)Swimming: Historymaker

Zhang Lin became China’s first male swimming world champ in Rome this summer

Freestyle swimmer Zhang Lin made an historic breakthrough for China when he won the 800m freestyle at the World Championships in Rome in July, demolishing Australian great Grant Hackett’s world record in the process.

His victory made him the first Chinese male swimmer to win a World Championships title.

“My biggest goal is the 2012 London Games. I hope I won’t miss the gold by another 0.58 seconds,” said Zhang, who settled for silver in Beijing last August, beaten by Park Tae-hwan of South Korea by that slim margin.

“I hope through my years of effort I can make up for my regrets at the Beijing Games.”

Zhang was not the only Chinese swimmer to stir up the pool this year. Women’s butterfly swimmer Liu Zige, the Beijing Olympic champion, set a world record of 2:01.81 at China’s National Games in October and broke the short-course record with 2:00.78 in Berlin, Germany, a month later.

    (2)Athletics: What a comeback

Liu Xiang reclaimed the spotlight with a strong comeback

After being absent from competition for 13 months, China’s star hurdler, Liu Xiang, reclaimed the spotlight with a strong comeback.

The country’s biggest track-and-field star racked up three victories and a runners-up finish in the four events he participated in over the past three months.

A surprising time of 13.15 started Liu’s comeback run at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix in September, where he was narrowly beaten by US veteran Terrence Trammell.

A month later, he clocked 13.34 to win his third China Games title and continued his good form at the Asian Championships last month with a victory in 13.50. The former Olympic and world champion capped his return with an easy victory at the East Asian Games in Hong Kong in December.

“After undergoing surgery in December last year, I didn’t think this year could be so smooth I didn’t know what kind of results I could gain,” Liu said.

What’s was just as pleasing to China’s track-and-field fans this year was that even without Liu, the country performed well at the Berlin World Championships in August. Spearheaded by a gold medal from women’s marathoner Bai Xue, the Chinese team exceeded expectations, earning one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

    (3)Diving: Falling angel

China’s diving diva, Guo Jingjing, consolidated her status as the most successful woman in the sport’s history by claiming two titles at the World Swimming Championships in Rome.

She won the double on the 3m springboard in the individual and synchronized events. It was the fifth straight time she had accomplished the feat at the Worlds and took her world title tally to 10.

Her Rome deeds added another chapter to a glorious career. At the Beijing Games, Guo claimed her third and fourth gold medals, making her the most decorated diver, along with Fu Mingxia, in Olympic history.

Guo has surpassed Fu in terms of records at major international tournaments. She is likely to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where one more gold would be enough to make her the undisputed No 1 diver of all time.

    (4)Basketball: Shanghai surprise

China’s NBA All-star Yao Ming has a new title in his hometown of Shanghai – Boss Yao.

After buying the Shanghai Sharks for 20 million yuan ($2.93 million) in July, Yao became the new head of the basketball team and has vowed to help it back to the top. “In the coming years our team will work hard to win more games. Looking into the eyes of our young players, I feel Shanghai will soon rise to the top again, ” Yao said..

Before heading off to the NBA in 2002, Yao led the club to its only CBA championship that season. Since then, the Sharks have struggled and even lost their main sponsor at the beginning of this year due to poor results which saw the side finish second last in the league.

Yao is not the only prominent person interested in the rapidly-developing CBA. China-born businessman Huang Jianhua took over the Jilin team in October.

    (5)Doping: Cheating or cheated

Sprinter Wang Jing tested positive for epitestosterone and testosterone after winning the women’s 100m final at the National Games in October in Shandong province, becoming the highest-profile Chinese athlete to fail a test this year.

Wang and her coach, Chen Hua, could face lifetime bans although they claim they don’t know how the drugs got into her system.

Wang, 21, is among China’s brightest sprint prospects. She finished fourth at the 2006 Junior World Championships in the 200m and was a key component of the 4x100m relay team which claimed gold at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

Wang’s doping case was one of three at the Games in Shandong. Guo Linna, a rower from Henan province, and Li Jie, a shooter from Inner Mongolia, were also found to have taken banned substances.

They were both kicked out of the meet.

    (6)Volleyball: ‘Hammer’ strikes again

The “Iron Hammer” Lang Ping continued her legendary career by signing on to coach Guangdong Evergrande Women’s Volleyball Club, the sport’s first privately-funded club in China.

Within two months, Lang put together a star-studded cast for the newly-established team, including Feng Kun, an ex-captain of the national team and setter, current US national team libero Nicole Davis and Christa Harmotto.

Not surprisingly, the team has claimed seven straight victories in the women’s second division.

“Lang has always been my idol as a player and a coach,” said Feng.

“I wanted to learn more from her and accumulate more experience, so I joined her club. I believe what I can learn here will benefit my future career and life.”

    (7)Figure skating: Gold the goal

Winning the Grand Prix finals title for the sixth time in Tokyo early this month topped a fine comeback for China’s veteran figure skating pair of Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo. Now, the Olympic gold medal is the only thing on their minds.

After more than two years in retirement, the three-time world champion pair burst back on to the skating scene this year in a bid to claim Olympic gold at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games in February.

The pair has won all three competitions it has participated in this season and upped its personal best scores each time. At the GP Finals in Tokyo, Shen and Zhao won gold with a record 214.25 points.

“The Olympic gold medal has always been our dream and we will strive for it step by step,” said 36-year-old Zhao.

Led by Shen/Zhao, the other two top Chinese pairs, Pang Qing/Tong Jian, the 2006 world champions and runners-up at the Grand Prix final this season, and Zhang Dan/Zhang Hao, will also strive for glory in Vancouver.

    (8)Match fixing: Finally …

Match fixing has been an open secret in China’s professionsal soccer leagues but it was not until March this year that the nation’s cabinet started to take is seriously.

For the first time, a high-profile committee was set up by 12 ministry-level organs to clean Chinese soccer of its evils. So far, at least seven executives, including two from China’s only English-backed soccer club Chengdu Blades, have been arrested and detained for match-fixing and gambling, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Meanwhile, dozens of former players and officials have been questioned with some of them being accused of gambling through foreign websites.

Nan Yong, deputy chairman of the Chinese Football Association (CFA), said the association would cooperate with the security bureau.

    (9)Cue sports: World in pocket

It was a superb year for China’s cue sports.

Star snooker player Ding Junhui announced his comeback by winning his second UK Championship title on Dec 13. It was also the 22-year-old’s first major tournament victory since claiming the 2006 Northern Ireland Trophy.

On the women’s side, 16-year-old Liu Shasha became the youngest player to win the World Women’s 9-ball Championships in Shangyang, Liaoning province, in November, the second Chinese winner of the event after Pan Xiaoting in 2007.

Also, Liang Wenbo reached the quarterfinals at the UK Championship. He was also only the second Chinese player and fourth Asian man to reach a ranking final at September’s Shanghai Masters.

    (10)National fitness: Sports for all

After topping the gold medal tally at last year’s Beijing Olympic Games for the first time, China has expanded its focus from competitive sports to mass sports, calling on and helping more and more people to take part in and benefit from daily exercise.

August 8, the opening date of the 2008 Beijing Games, has been named National Fitness Day and various activities were held all over the country to mark the anniversary, including fitness lectures, table tennis competitions and a chance to seek help from sports scientists.

“The Olympics were not only the show of elite athletes but also the embodiment of sport’s general values, which inspired more and more Chinese people to join sports enthusiastically,” said Liu Peng, China’s sports minister.

National Fitness Regulations came into effect on Oct 1. The regulations emphasize the rights of students to practise sports and encourage the opening of sports facilities to the public after school and on holidays.

While the athletes fought for medals at the 11th National Games in October, the organizers chose “Harmonious China, People’s Games” as the motto to promote physical fitness nationwide rather than the Games being a mere a demonstration of the country’s sports strength.

Beijing will have none other than NBA superstar Kobe Bryant promoting its historical places next year, with its tourist attractions adoring the court of his team, the Lakers.

In fact, Beijing could see its historical landmarks splashed at Staples Center in Los Angeles as early as next week.

“We have become a Lakers’ partner for the new (NBA) season,” Gu Xiaoyuan, deputy director of the Beijing municipal bureau of tourism, said on Friday.

Speaking at the 2010 Beijing Tourism Marketing conference, she said: “There will be many advertisements for Beijing in Lakers’ home court throughout the season.”

“As part of our contract, Kobe will attend at least one promotion event for the Beijing tourism bureau. And we will offer free entry to NBA fans for those events.”

When the Lakers take on Thunder on Dec 22 at the Staples Center, one of the spectators will win a free trip for two to Beijing.

The Forbidden City, once home to a long line of emperors, is Beijing's most enduring emblem

The lucky couple will get a free six-day, five-night stay in Emperor, a deluxe hotel located between Forbidden City and Beijing’s central business district. They will also get to visit many of the historical places for free.

The second promotion will be held during Spring Festival in February, she said.
